It wasn’t going well; the whole – wake up to the sound of my twins on the monitor then hit the ground running – thing. I’d been thinking about about waking up earlier for a while to sneak in some me-time/prep-time, but it’s not easy when you have twin toddlers and you just.want.your.sleeeeep. Right?!

The kicker for me to go from “thinking about it” to actually setting my alarm was this Oklahoma summer heat. It’s HOT, y’all. HOT! Now that I’m registered for the Route 66 Half-Marathon this fall, I have to up my game when it comes to working out throughout the week. The only feasible way for me to escape OK’s exhausting summer heat AND maximize the time that my hubby’s home for kiddo-supervision is to set my alarm for 5:00 a.m.

Eeeeeek! It’s a whole 1 – 1.5 hour/s earlier than I usually get up with H & E, but y’all: so far I totally love it. Seriously!

Here’s a sample hour and a half of my morning now:

5:00 a.m. – I “shush” my alarm, then stare at the ceiling while trying to convince myself that I can do this; wake up and be Wonder Woman by running before my family wakes up.

5:10 am – Come to the conclusion that, yes…sure…what the heck…I’ll be Wonder Woman today. I get out of bed and get ready for a run.

5:15 a.m. – Run! My legs feel heavy, it’s dark out, and my breathing takes a while to find its cadence, but I try to ignore all that and find my rhythm. Just 2 short miles. Pppssshhh, I’ve got this! I cross the road and head into the next neighborhood over. I love it there. Older ranch style homes on multiple acres. Chickens, horses, roosters, among other fun animals.

5:20 a.m. – “Good morning!” I say to the donkey (mhmm, that’s right) who stares me down with bewilderment as I run on by him (…or her?).

5:25 a.m. – I catch a glimpse of the gorgeous fog elevated over a long stretch of grass. Beautiful!

5:35 a.m. – I round the corner back to my neighborhood, then I’m back home. I take a quick moment to stretch. I catch a glimpse of the sunrise. Just heavenly. I snap a pic and add it to my Insta-Story (@ok.kath if you wanna follow me!).


5:40 a.m.  – I shower (in the morning! This is bliss!), then do the dishes, prep food for H & E, switch out a load of laundry, and did I mention I SHOWERED already?! Winning!!!

6:30 a.m.  – I make my coffee with milk & honey. H & E are up! I walk upstairs, feeling so refreshed and accomplished. The sun is up, the day is young, and I’ve got these two smiling faces to snuggle and play with today: 


And just like that, I’ve found my new schedule. Early to rise for this mama!

I don’t intend on running every single morning, but don’t forget, I also do strength training/fit camp from home 3x a week (StudiOne’s Fit Camp {from home}). So, my plan moving forward is to do 3-4 days of early morning runs + 3 days of early morning strength building workouts. Perfect! Fits right in line with my 7 workouts per week plan that I added to my new year’s resolution (My 2017).

I’ve always had this pressing sense of urgency in me saying, “Don’t miss it.” Life is such a gift and while I do get tired, complain, and often feel entitled to more me-time…I need to remember that what I want is always right there for the taking. It’s there for all of us! Sometimes we just have to wake up and run after it. 🙂
